Effects of Maternal Anxiety, Depression, and Parenting Stress on Mother-Child Interaction

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify effects of mother¡¯s anxiety, depression and parenting stress on mother-child interaction. Subjects of this study were 272 mothers of young children aged 1 to 36 months attending 10 kindergartens and child care centers in Cheongju city. Data were analyzed using SPSS program, and path analysis was done by AMOS 7.0.

The results of this study were as follows: First, mother¡¯s anxiety did not have a direct effect on mother -child interaction, but it had a direct effect on depression, daily parenting stress, and guilty feeling of parenting stress. Second, mother¡¯s depression had a direct effect on mother-child interaction such as linguistic interaction and sensitivity while it had an indirect effect on positive interaction and corporal punishment of mother-child interaction through daily parenting stress. Third, mother¡¯s daily parenting stress had a direct effect on mother-child interaction such as positive interaction and corporal punishment, and it had an indirect effect on linguistic interaction and sensitivity through guilty feeling of
parenting stress. Fourth, mother¡¯s guilty feeling of parenting stress had a direct effect on mother-child interaction such as linguistic interaction, corporal punishment, and sensitivity.
